- Providence of God Meaning
The providence of God upholds and governs every created thing. Its operation is coextensive with the universe, and as unceasing as the flow of time. All his attributes are engaged in it. He provideth for the raven his food, and satisfieth the desire of every living thing.
This divine, sovereign, and benevolent control of all things by God is the underlying premise of everything that is taught in the Scriptures. A doctrine of providence appears in intertestamental Jewish and Greek thought, as well as in the Scriptures.
Providence is related to creation on the one hand and to the history of salvation on the other. Theologians speak of this second aspect as “special” providence. In Nehemiah 9:6-38 , God's general and special providence are brought together in the same passage.
