Sep 20, 2024 · The World Bank’s Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP) released updated global poverty estimates. By now, global extreme poverty has returned to pre-pandemic levels. However, low- and lower-middle-income countries have been less resilient, facing additional shocks from inflationary pressures following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The World Bank Group has set a clear mission: ending poverty and boosting shared prosperity on a livable planet. This report offers the first post-pandemic assessment of global progress toward these interlinked goals, and explores potential pathways out of today's polycrisis - an environment where multiple and interconnected challenges are impacting the world simultaneously.
Global poverty estimates were updated today on the World Bank's Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP). More than 100 new surveys were added to the PIP database, bringing the total number of surveys to more than 2,300. With more recent survey data, this March 2024 PIP update is the first to report a global poverty number for 2020-2022, the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Survey coverage for low- and lower-middle-income countries for 2019 is 78.8%.
