The species is now better protected from wanton hunting by international laws, but it still faces several other threats.

Aug 21, 2020 · Humans have hunted dugongs for thousands of years, primarily for its meat and oil. Dugong foraging. Also, their seagrass habitat is fragmented and sensitive, leaving dugong populations that feed on them vulnerable as well. In order for populations to be sustained, only 1-2% can be lost to these human-caused threats.

Two notable exceptions to this mating system are dugongs in Shark Bay, Australia and Steller's sea cows. Male dugongs in Shark Bay defend territories and attempt to attract females, rather than actively pursuing them. Steller’s sea cows may have been monogamous, living with long lasting family groups consisting of a mating pair and two offspring.
