Tobias Hawthorne chose Avery because he knew that his reputation would cause his enemies to come after his fortune once he has passed. He didn’t want Grayson, or any other Hawthornes, to have to deal with them and be in harms way.
But the action of Avery at the end has me boiling. How could she give away 94% of her money and not give any to the Hawthorns? She could have easily given 20 billion to charity and gave a billion to each Hawthorne brother, Zara, Libby, and Max.
The only thing stopping himself from throwing his life away in one of his games is apparently Avery, which is messed up because that isn't even the bare minimum, it's a mandate. He isn't in a relationship if he's dead. He doesn't fix this issue of his and he doesn't even reflect on it.
