Sep 28, 2023 · General Vanier classes began in 1965 at the Y.M.C.A. but it was in 1967 that the Cumberland Street building officially opened it’s doors to secondary school students for the first time. Many former students were located within blocks of each other in the 10th street area of Cornwall and recall the long walks to school and adventures on lunch hour.

The school served students from grades 9 to 12 and offered a range of academic and extracurricular activities. In the late 1960s, General Vanier Secondary School was constructed at 155 Gibb Street. Decades later, in the mid 1990s, Vanier and Central amalgamated and retained the name Oshawa Central Collegiate.

General Vanier Secondary School was closed nearly seven years ago as part of a UCDSB consolidation process.
