Weston Park Museum first opened to the public on 6 September 1875, displaying collections of natural history, metalwork, archaeology and oil paintings. The building was very different to the one that exists today.
For much of its history the complex was officially known as the Sheffield City Museum and Mappin Art Gallery. The museum contained Sheffield's archaeology, natural history, decorative art and social history collections.

Apr 20, 2023 · This isn’t to say Weston Park has been forgotten about for the last 17 years. Ten years after it reopened in 2006, the museum was awarded £1 million from the HLF to completely revamp its archaeology and art galleries with new lighting, flooring, decoration and “futureproofed” display cases.

Alongside Bateman’s vast collection lies 50,000 years of Sheffield’s history, preserved in time through artefacts, images, films and interactive spaces.
