As the name suggests, an annual general meeting (AGM) is a formal, yearly meeting between the shareholders of a company and its board of directors.
Public companies are legally required to hold an AGM every year. Private companies and charities are not generally required to hold an AGM, unless specified in their articles of association (a document setting out the legal constitution of the organisation).
AGMs have to take place within six months of the financial year-end. For example, a company with a December year-end must hold its AGM by the end of June. In practice, many AGMs are held within three to four months of the year-end, which is often between March to May for companies with December year-ends.
Shareholders of a company, often referred to as ‘members’, are entitled to attend AGMs. Board members and auditors will also typically attend. Some articles of association allow the general public to attend, but they are unable to vote unless they are shareholders. Sep 9, 2024 · Set up the space before the meeting. On the day of the AGM, arrive several hours early so that you can set up the room. Keep in mind that some attendees may arrive 30 minutes early or so. Try to have the all of the seats and refreshments set up before that happens.
