First craft an empty map, which is paper on all 9 slots. Take the empty map, and run around the spot that you want to map out. Maps are 128 x 128 large, and it's a 1:1 raito, which means for each block you place or load, it will take up 1 pixel on the map. If need be, craft multiple maps and go around the area you want loaded.
