  2. Sep 8, 2015 · 16. You seem to be mistaken in seeing only two universities in California. In fact, the two example you cite are University Systems, each with many universities under them. For example, the University of California system has UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Los Angeles, and many more. The same is true for the other system.

  3. Pennsylvania has 4 (yes, four!) different University systems. Penn State was the agricultural college, the University System of PA were the normal schools, the University of Pittsburgh was a private college that became public, and Temple was a religious college that became partially state-funded. All with multiple campuses.

  4. Pennsylvania actually has two more semi-public university systems as well University of Pittsburgh and Temple, both taken in by the state after being founded as private schools. Some states also had colleges dedicated to some vocation or another (Technical or Agricultural colleges) that morphed into a second university system that may or may not retain a Tech or A&M designation in the name.
