Nov 11, 2020 · Conflict can happen even in the most supportive, positive, and open classrooms, disrupting your students’ ability to learn. If left unchecked, it could even lead to violence. Many districts may offer some type of conflict resolution training.
On any given day, a highly effective teacher can facilitate, guide, support, foster, and nurture a positive learning environment — but we can never control it. Subsequently, creating classroom culture or managing student behaviors is a major stressor for teachers at all levels.
Unlike many other forms of student aggres-sion, fighting is explicit, is violent, and demands attention. A fight between students in a classroom, a hallway, or the lunchroom brings every other activity to a halt and draws fellow students and concerned adults toward the violence.

- Encourage positive reinforcement among students. Positive reinforcement is a great way to prevent conflict because it rewards desired behaviors and discourages negative ones.
- Establish clear rules and consequences from the beginning of the school year about conflicts in the classroom. When students know what is expected of them and what will happen if they don’t meet those expectations, they’re less likely to engage in disruptive behavior that can lead to conflict.
- Make sure all students have access to resources and support. Not all students will respond positively to rules and consequences, so it is important to make sure they have the resources they need to cope with conflict in a healthy way.
- Have high expectations for students’ behavior regarding conflict management in the classroom. From an early age, students are socialized to interact with others and resolve conflicts.
