- Students who have been academically dismissed from the university must petition to return. Strong cases for reinstatement typically include two things: 1) strong grades from classes taken at another institution, often a community college, after the dismissal, 2) a plan for pursuing an achievable major of interest upon returning to Ohio State.

Dismissal is a permanent separation from the university without the right to reapply. Dismissed students may not be present on university property. Dismissal affects not just your future enrollment, but your current enrollment as well – you could be dropped from all of your classes regardless of your progress.
What is academic dismissal and why and when do we use this tool? Can a student return to Ohio State after being academically dismissed? How does this reinstatement petition process work?
Students may be reinstated after an academic dismissal, provided they attend another institution and can demonstrate academic success before seeking readmission. The published university deadlines for submitting a request for reinstatement for academic dismissal are:
The Grade Forgiveness rule allows undergraduate students who repeat a course to request for the grade and earned credit hours from the second enrollment to premanently replace the grade and hours from the first attempt in the student's OSU GPA and earned hours calculations.
If approved, the first attempt’s grade and credit hours will be removed from the Ohio State cumulative grade-point average (GPA) upon completion of the second attempt. Students who passed the course the first time and fail it the second will lose credit for the course.
After two semesters away from Ohio State, students can submit a petition for reinstatement to return to Ohio State. These petitions aren’t guaranteed, so students need to demonstrate that, if allowed to return, they will be successful in their major and graduate.
