Even high dollar commercial radios come into the shop with burned up receive or transmit due to the 'wrong antenna'. The power has to go somewhere..... So YES you do risk damage.

Without an antenna, this energy has nowhere to go and may reflect back into the radio, leading to overheating or damage to the transmitter circuits. Aug 22, 2006 · a few things to start. -if the antenna is an hd series winegard, the circuit board inside the plastic case at the antenna corrodes/cracks sometimes over time...remove the circuit board and clean the contacts and reassemble. -the powersupply to the ap8700 has gone bad or is not attached.
