    Pencey Preparatory School is a fictional exclusive boarding school for boys in Agerstown, Pennsylvania which Holden Caulfield attended before being expelled.

    Established a preparatory school for the elite in 1888, Pencey prides itself in "molding boys into splendid, clear-thinking young men". Pencey advertises in numerous magazines including ads that depict a boy on a horse jumping over a fence, though according to Holden, he has never seen a horse anywhere near the place.

    Athletics

    Football is an important custom among Pencey students that on the last game of the year against rival school Saxon Hall, Holden mentions that "you were supposed to commit suicide or something if Old Pencey didn't win." During these games, almost all Pencey students would attend and cheer. Pencey also has a wrestling team, which Mal Brossard is one of the known members. Pencey also has a basketball team which Ed Banky is the coach and Ward Stradlater is one of the mentioned members. Pencey also has a fencing team, which is managed by Holden Caulfield
