Part 1, Pages 1-44 Analysis. These opening pages give the novel’s historical context. The Pull of the Stars takes place in fall 1918 in Ireland, which is still under British rule. Many Irish men have left to fight in World War I. In addition, the 1918 influenza pandemic is having a profound effect on Ireland.
The following version of this book was used to create the guide: Donoghue, Emma. The Pull of the Stars. Harper Avenue, 2020. Donoghue divides the novel into four sections: Red, Brown, Blue, and Black which depict three days in the life of narrator, Julia Power. In “Red,” midwife Julia goes to work at a Dublin hospital on October 31st 1918.
The city is plagued by the great flu or grippe which in combination with the war which causes scarcity of resources. Tomorrow is her 30th birthday. At the hospital entrance, she finds a young nurse who found a dying man on the street and brought him here on a stretcher. Julia finds the male orderlies and asks them to carry the stretcher up.
Part 4, Pages 232-244 Summary. As she leaves the Maternity/Fever ward, Julia runs into Bridie. They see a poster in the hall that says, “The government has the situation well in hand” and “If you feel yourself succumbing, report yourself and lie down for a fortnight” (235), advising the sick to stay in bed to recover from the flu.
