If the photon energy is absorbed, the energy from the photon typically manifests itself as heating the matter up. The absorption of light makes an object dark or opaque to the wavelengths or colors of the incoming wave: Wood is opaque to visible light. Some materials are opaque to some wavelengths of light, but transparent to others.

- Where Does Color Come from?
Atoms and molecules contain electrons. It is often useful to think of these electrons as being attached to the atoms by springs. The electrons and their attached springs have a tendency to vibrate at specific frequencies. Similar to a tuning fork or even a musical instrument, the electrons of atoms have a natural frequency at which they tend to vib...
Reflection and transmission of light waves occur because the frequencies of the light waves do not match the natural frequencies of vibration of the objects. When light waves of these frequencies strike an object, the electrons in the atoms of the object begin vibrating. But instead of vibrating in resonance at a large amplitude, the electrons vibr...
The color of the objects that we see is largely due to the way those objects interact with light and ultimately reflect or transmit it to our eyes. The color of an object is not actually within the object itself. Rather, the color is in the light that shines upon it and is ultimately reflected or transmitted to our eyes. We know that the visible li...
Light absorption is the process in which light is absorbed by matter and converted into energy. In an atom, electrons vibrate at a specific frequency – this is called the natural frequency. If a wave of light hits a material in which the electrons are vibrating at the same frequency as the wave of light, the electrons will absorb the energy ...
Jan 30, 2023 · Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\): Light absorbed by sample in a cuvette. The intensity of the light passing through the sample cell is also measured for that wavelength - given the symbol, \(I\). If \(I\) is less than \(I_o\), then the sample has absorbed some of the light (neglecting reflection of light off the cuvette surface).
Jan 30, 2023 · The greater the frequency, the greater the energy. That's easy - but unfortunately UV-visible absorption spectra are always given using wavelengths of light rather than frequency. That means that you need to know the relationship between wavelength and frequency. You can see from this that the higher the frequency is, the lower the wavelength is.
Given the typical power required by an LED, the temperature gain would be minimal. For all practical purposes, all wavelengths of sunlight will heat an object of any color. The amount of heat produced by light incident upon an object depends on the material properties. Some wavelengths will be reflected, some absorbed, and some transmitted.

By recording the attenuation of light for various wavelengths, an absorption spectrum can be obtained. In physics, absorption of electromagnetic radiation is how matter (typically electrons bound in atoms) takes up a photon 's energy — and so transforms electromagnetic energy into internal energy of the absorber (for example, thermal energy).
