First World War
These records are open and digitized. They can be accessed in the Personnel Records of the First World War database.
Second World War
1. If the person died during the Second World War: records can be found in the Second World War Service Files – War Dead, 1939 to 1947 database. 2. If a person survived the war: information may be protected by the Privacy Act. These records are restricted, so you’ll need to make an ATIP requestto access this information.
Korean War
These records may be protected by the Privacy Act. You’ll need to make an ATIP requestto access this information.

First, look at what has been previously requested. You can download or request completed past Access to Information requests through these databases: 1. Completed Access to Information requests database 2. Open Government Portal
Digitized records
You can look through Collection Searchto find a record of interest. There may be a digital image available. Collection search will note if a record is open or restricted under the Conditions of access section of the Ordering and viewing options tab. For more information, see the explanation of restriction codes. If the digitized records are restricted, you will need to make an ATIP request. Some records may also be requested from National Defence.
Non-digitized records
For records that are not digitized but that are open (access code 90), once you find them in Collection Search you can see them in person, order copies or hire a researcher.

Every active Canadian Armed Forces unit submits Annual Historical Reports (AHRs) by regulation. About 575 units currently submit reports. The AHR provides an historical summary of the unit's activities for the calendar year ending December 31.
