This unit was updated in July 2021 to include more accurate advice about food allergies and anaphylaxis. All mixed up provides students with hands-on opportunities to: explore and create mixtures of solids, mixtures of solids and liquids, and mixtures of liquids; identify different everyday mixtures found in the school and home
The All mixed up unit is an ideal way to link science with literacy in the classroom. Students learn about materials that don’t mix well, and others that are dificult to separate. Through hands-on investigations, students explore how changing the quantities of materials in a mixture can alter its properties and uses.
By the end of this lesson, students will: Identify how materials are the same and different. Make predictions about the changes that will happen to materials when they are combined. Closely observe and describe the changes that happen to materials when they are combined.
All Mixed Up (Year 2, Stage 1) **This unit aligns with the old NSW Science & Technology syllabus**.
LESSON 1: All Mixed Up • 311 LEARNING GOALS •nterpret and determine sums and differences of rational I numbers in real-world contexts. • Represent and apply the additive inverse in real-world contexts. • Determine distance as the absolute value of the difference between two signed numbers in real-world contexts.
In All mixed up, students represent and explain their understanding about how different materials can be combined for a particular purpose. This is an extensive teaching unit focused on learning, through a collaborative, inquiry-based approach, about combining substances into mixtures and separating components.
