Sep 23, 2010 · Unconscious Competence. Stage 1 Unconscious incompetence. As an unconscious incompetent, a person does not know what they do not know. Note, this does not exclude the possibility that they think they know as much or more than others. Therefore, in this stage they may be in one of two positions.
Many skills require practice to remain at a high level of competence. The four stages suggest that individuals are initially unaware of how little they know, or unconscious of their incompetence. As they recognize their incompetence, they consciously acquire a skill, then consciously use it.
