The most important distinction among the many biomes in Minecraft is the weather of the region. Some biomes like deserts and badlands do not experience rain, while other like tundras and frozen biomes only experience snow.
Different types of mobs will spawn in different biomes. This is true even for biomes in other dimensions since some nether mobs only spawn in certain nether biomes.
Different blocks can also only be found in certain biomes, some of these blocks are incredibly useful resources or building materials, so traveling to rarer biomes to obtain these materials is sometimes necessary to complete certain builds.
Some structures only generate inside certain biomes. Witch Huts only generate in Swamps, Ancient Cities only generate in the Deep Dark, and so on. To find and conquer different structures in the game, you'll need to go out and explore the biomes where they generate.
The two other noticable differences you can spot among biomes is the color of their grass and water. This change is especially noticeable at the border of two biomes, where you often see a visible shift in color.
In Minecraft, the Mountains (formerly called the Extreme Hills) is a biome in the Overworld. It has towering mountains with waterfalls, lavafalls, and ponds. If you tunnel into mountains, you can find deep caves that are fun to explore. The Mountains biomes have dull green-blue grass.
- Sunflower plains. A variation of the plains biome that is the only place in the game that sunflowers will spawn. Sunflowers are these excellent looking plants that will follow the sun as it treks across the sky.
- Flower forest. The flower forest is a rare variation of the normal forest that features fewer trees but an overabundance of, well, flowers. In fact, the flower forest grows nearly every kind of flower and fauna available in the game, including many that are exclusive to the forest flower.
- Birch forest. The birch forest is essentially a regular ole' forest, but with nothing but birch trees. These biomes are also uncommon and don't have any real advantage over a typical forest.
- Dark forest. Dark forests are intriguing biomes comprised mostly of dark oak trees and a few large mushrooms. Trees in this biome are so tightly packed that the resulting shadows from their leaves can actually spawn hostile mobs even during the day.
