It was initially used to describe the ideal score an expert golfer would be expected to make on a hole. Over time, the term evolved to mean one stroke over par. The name itself is believed to have derived from a popular British music hall song called “The Bogey Man,” which was synonymous with a mysterious and elusive figure, much like the ideal score was for golfers of the time.
