In agriculture and horticulture, soil generally refers to the medium for plant growth, typically material within the upper meter or two (Figure 9.1.1 9.1. 1). Examples of soil organic carbon (SOC) concentrations in soil horizons buried below 1 m depth under glacial, erosional, and multiple types of deposits. Letters (a, b) indicate multiple buried soil horizons within a vertical profile. Numbers (1, 2) indicate buried soils from different profiles or sites reported in the same study.
