Dec 19, 2023 · With so many types of illustration styles available to choose from today, creating visual representations of ideas and stories can be done in hundreds of ways. From flat illustrations in web design, to watercolor illustrations in children’s books, there’s an option for every artist.
- Tim Burton. Tim Burton has a very characteristic and dark art style that still carries a lot of emotion. It isn’t dark for the sake of being dark, you can see that his characters have several layers of emotion expressed in them.
- The Simpsons. This cartoon art style is so widely popular, that there are even quite a few websites that you can use to create a Simpson’s version of yourself.
- Classic Disney. Disney had a pretty evolutionary cartoon art style over the years. It started with what I call Classic Disney, with cartoons like “Steamboat Willie” and “It’s Got Me Again!”.
- Mid 20th Century Disney. During the mid 20th century, Disney started working more and more with live actors, drawing from reference and filming shots before drawing the cartoons.
- Cartoon Style Illustrations. Cartoon-style illustrations, known for their vibrant and engaging visuals, are one of the most common styles in children’s books.
- Realistic Illustration Style. In children’s books, the term “Realistic Illustration Style” means something specific. It’s not hyper-realistic but aims to portray things somewhat like they appear in real life.
- Wimmelbuch Style. Wimmelbuch originates from Germany and you can easily recognize this style by the densely packed, highly detailed scenes teeming with characters, objects, and activities.
- Whimsical Illustrations Style. Whimsical illustrations, also known as fantasy or whimsical artwork, offer a delightful and charming style that awakens childlike wonder.

- Doodling. This is where it all starts for most of us. Doodling is an informal drawing style, usually created absent-mindedly (for instance, to keep yourself entertained in class).
- Photorealism. This drawing style takes serious skill and patience. Are you up for the challenge? You may be inspired by artists who can portray high levels of realism in their drawings and wish to do the same yourself.
- Hyperrealism. As a contemporary advancement of the photorealistic drawing style, hyperrealism strives to be "more real than reality." Because hyperrealistic drawings are so extremely detailed, you may struggle to discern the medium used.
- Cartoon style. Cartoons are a more stylized approach to drawing, and many other styles exist within this style. You could explore caricature drawing, cartoon strip, or comic book style or invent your own cartoon drawing style.
