It came out in 2010, immediately caught the noses of the fragrance community, and by the mid aughts, blew up into mainstream popularity. Aventus’s main strength is the fact it’s pretty inoffensive.
It's a dead horse, but Aventus is just an incredibly versatile and masculine scent. It may be discussed to death in the frag community, but it's rare to smell it out in the 'real' world. Most folks seem to wear designer stuff. I liken it's popularity to, say, Queen or Steinbeck. It's popular because it's great.
