Here’s a simple formula to estimate the furnace size you need: Square Footage of Your Home x Climate Zone Heating Factor = Total BTUs Needed. For instance, if you have a 1,800-square-foot home in Toronto (Zone 4), and you use a heating factor of 50 BTUs per square foot, you’d calculate: 1,800 sq. ft. x 50 BTUs = 90,000 BTUs
Sep 22, 2016 · Furnaces typically have around an 80 percent efficiency rating, though newer models have a 90 percent efficiency. The more expensive and powerful models will have a 95 to 98 percent efficiency rating. The efficiency rating does not affect how many BTUs a furnace puts out.
A furnace’s run time depends on various factors, including the size of your home, the outdoor temperature, the efficiency of your furnace, and the thermostat settings. Generally, during moderate weather, a furnace should run for about 10 to 15 minutes per cycle.
For example, a furnace with an Input BTU can have an efficiency of 80%. That means the furnace will produce 80,000 BTU of heat. If that same furnace has an efficiency of 95%, the furnace will produce 95,000 BTU of heat.
An 80,000 BTU 94 AFUE furnace will have a heat output of 80,000 BTU. Due to 90% efficiency (90 AFUE), the input will be 85,106 BTU. You can freely use the calculator to roughly estimate the capacity of a furnace you need.
