Feb 17, 2023 · Soil Horizons. The soil is the topmost layer of the earth’s crust consisting of air, water, inorganic minerals (rock, sand, clay, and slit), and organic matter (dead plants and animals). It forms the source of food for plants. It provides shelter for many animals such as insects, centipedes, burrowing animals, microorganisms, and many others.
Most soils have three major horizons (A, B, C) and some have an organic horizon (O). The horizons are: O (humus or organic): Mostly organic matter such as decomposing leaves. The O horizon is thin in some soils, thick in others, and not present at all in others. A (topsoil): Mostly minerals from parent material with organic matter incorporated.
Eluvial and eluviation: Eluviation is the transfer of material out from a horizon. For example, the Ae is an eluvial horizon which may have lost clay, iron, or aluminum. Extremely calcareous: A CaCO 3 equivalent % > 40. F: This organic horizon is characterized by an accumulation of partly decomposed organic matter. Some of the original ...
The start and end of the A and B horizons as measured from the soil surface. For example, if there is an LFH layer on top of your mineral soil that is 5 cm thick, you would record it as LFH 5-0 cm. The A soil horizon then starts at 0 cm below the surface and ends at 11 cm, and this depth will be recorded as 0-11 cm.
In some cases it is not necessary to use Roman numerals to show strongly contrasting horizons, for example if the horizon symbol already indicates the difference. Roman numerals are not required if the soil is composed of peat materials overlain by folic materials and underlain by mineral soil (L, F, Om, Oh, C) or if a mineral soil has a folic or peaty surface layer (L, F, Bm, BC, C; or Om ...
Cambic Horizon is the result of physical alterations, chemical transformations, or removals or of a combination of two or more of these processes. A cambic horizon: 1. is ≥15 cm thick; AND 2. Has a texture class of very fine sand, loamy very fine sand, or finer; AND 3.

These are called transitional horizons, and indicated by two capital letters like AB or BA. The first of the two is the more dominant of the two processes. A similar-looking notation but with an added /, like E/B or B/E mean that there are distinct areas of each in the layer rather than a smooth transition.
