The texts of the Bible have been around much longer than the printing press. For most of its history, the “Bible” was a group of scrolls and parchments. You didn’t have just one book: you had a whole library. That’s why “Bible” means “books,” and that’s why people talk about the “books of the Bible.”

Joseph’s story is written in the first book of the Bible, called Genesis (which means ‘beginnings’). To help you read the story for yourself, it’s been printed in Joseph’s Jotter. It’s a long story, so this is a slightly shorter version. During PYRAMID ROCK
- Genesis — God creates the universe and fashions humans in His own image and places them in a perfect environment. The humans rebel against God and lose their paradise.
- Exodus — The children of Israel, now living in Egypt, are forced into slavery. God prepares an Israelite named Moses to lead the people to freedom. The king is loath to let the slaves go, so God sends a series of plagues upon the Egyptians.
- Leviticus — In the Law, God establishes a sacrificial system to atone for sins and a series of festivals for Israel to observe as days of worship. God gives Moses plans for a tabernacle, a tent where the sacrifices can be offered and God will meet with His people.
- Numbers — The Israelites arrive at the border of Canaan, the land God had earlier promised to Abraham. But the people following Moses refuse to enter the land, due to their lack of faith and their fear of Canaan’s inhabitants.
- Genesis. Attributed Author: Moses. Year Written: 1445-1405 B.C. Genre: The Law. Chapters: 50. The Book of Genesis is the first book of the Bible, recording God’s Creation, the fall of man, the choosing of a family to bless all nations, and the early years of the nation of Israel.

In the Book of Exodus, God appoints Moses as the leader of the Israelites to rescue his chosen people from slavery in Egypt so they could travel to the Promised Land and makes a covenant with them at Mount Sinai.
- Leviticus. Attributed Author: Moses. Year Written: 1445-1405 B.C. Genre: The Law. Chapters: 27. In the Book of Leviticus, God gives Israel laws for worship and holy living.
- Numbers. Attributed Author: Moses. Year Written: 1445-1405 B.C. Genre: The Law. Chapters: 36. The Book of Numbers is the culmination of the story of Israel’s exodus from oppression in Egypt and their journey wandering in the wilderness for 40 years because of their disobedience and lack of faith until they take possession of the land God promised their fathers.
