Nov 8, 2024 · The Short Answer: It takes approximately 365.25 days for Earth to orbit the Sun — a solar year. We usually round the days in a calendar year to 365. To make up for the missing partial day, we add one day to our calendar approximately every four years. That is a leap year.
A leap year (also known as an intercalary year or bissextile year) is a calendar year that contains an additional day (or, in the case of a lunisolar calendar, a month) compared to a common year. The 366th day (or 13th month) is added to keep the calendar year synchronised with the astronomical year or seasonal year . [ 1 ]

Feb 8, 2020 · There’s a February 29 (almost) every four years. We have leap years because astronomical events do not repeat in a whole number of days. Earth completes an orbit around the Sun in 365.2422 days. So, a year is 365.2422 days long, not 365 days. It is called a tropical year (or a solar year).

That means that if your birthday were to occur on a Monday one year, the next year it should occur on a Tuesday. However, the addition of an extra day during a leap year means that your birthday now “leaps” over a day. Instead of your birthday occurring on a ...
