The mayor is elected at large, and the aldermen may be elected at large but generally are chosen from wards or aldermanic districts. The mayor presides at council meetings and is the chief executive officer of the city.
There are two major forms of city government in Texas: (1) Mayor-Council and (2) Council-Manager. The Mayor-Council category can be even further broken down to strong-mayor versus weak-mayor.
