- The fourth-generation F-body is equipped with GM's 7.5-inch 10-bolt rear axle. It uses a rubber lip-type seal to keep gear lube from slipping past the pinion flange during normal operation. As miles accumulate and years pass, the rubber within the seal has a tendency to shrink up and/or crack, leading to a fluid leak.

May 30, 2010 · Advice about changing the rear pinion seal on the Duramax 3500, and some tools needed. I pulled the driveshaft loose at the rear yoke only to find that there is a 12point nut on the yoke. Not been fun trying to figure out what size that nut is.

Jul 5, 2006 · If you have installed the ring & pinion and carrier yourself and used a "crush sleeve eliminator kit" instead of a crush sleeve (thanks @ILuvJDM) all you need to do is install the new seal and torque the pinion nut to 130 ft/lbs. The crush sleeve eliminator keeps the pinion preload always the same after removing and reinstalling the pinion yoke.
