A real Atari disk is a complex mess of adhesive magnetic stuff, made sense of by a dedicated floppy disk controller and then made useable by a computer in the disk drive. All these things boil the structure of the real disk down to a specific number of useable sectors for each recording surface, each of a fixed length.

May 3, 2021 · The differences between the Atari 810 and 1050 (besides the fact that a 1050 is a half-height drive and the 810 is not) was the format. 1050 formats 26 sectors, 810 does 18. That meant 1010 sectors on an "enhanced" density 1050 vs. the 707 on the 810. Each sector =128 bytes. You can get 127K on a ED disk, or 88K on a SD disk.
Oct 8, 2005 · Media change detection - Atari solved it little unusual, and today only few drives support it. Point is in way how WP line works - if it will change status by disk change it is OK, otherwise Atari will not detect disk change what may result in data corruption on it. It stays for non-write protected floppies.
