Oct 9, 2020 · Okay first let's clear up a misconception: .COM and .XEX files are executable binary files, not cartridge ROMs. Atari cartridge ROM files are usually called .CAR (if they have a file header attached that defines the cartridge type and bankswitching used by the original cartridge) or .ROM or sometimes .BIN if they are straight ROM dumps without the .CAR header.

Jun 2, 2015 · The XEGS version (v4) does have additional support for detecting the keyboard and activating the game ROM, but you can use it on an XL/XE without problems, and using the XL/XE version on the XEGS just means the game ROM doesn't activate. The main thing that Altirra is concerned about is just whether the OS is 10K (400/800) or 16K (XL/XE/XEGS).

There are plenty of places to download proper car versions of pretty much every 8-bit cart ever made. You can also easily make them yourself from your rom files using a simple html tool.
