TOPIX. Tokyo Stock Price Index (東証株価指数, Tōshō Kabuka shisū), commonly known as TOPIX, along with the Nikkei 225, is an important stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) in Japan, which tracks the entire market of domestic companies and covers most stocks in the Prime Market and some stocks in the Standard Market.

Mar 20, 2024 · Unlike the Nikkei, which represents a price-weighted index of the top 225 blue-chip companies, TOPIX is a capitalization-weighted index encompassing all firms listed in the TSE’s “first section,” comprising Japan’s largest corporations by market capitalization.
The TOPIX was created after the Nikkei in the year 1969. It was created as a market cap weighted index to be a more accurate representation of the Japanese stock market. It incorporates free float into its weighting as a way to exclude cross company held shares.
