Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (1 Cor. 13:4–7)
Perhaps the single most helpful passage to furnish a working biblical definition of love is 1 Jn 4:16,17. It shows love is not simply doing for others what they think we should for them . . . or ourselves! 1 Jn 4:16,17: "16Indeed we have known (Gk perfect tense) and have believed (Gk perfect tense) the love which the God has within (1722/en) us.
Love is obeying God’s commands. If we are to love one another as ourselves, we must first love God through obedience, and we must always love God more than anyone else, even our wives and children. God in His love for us sacrificed His very own Son that we may live and love. Thus we must live out our love for Him by sacrificing our lives for Him.
