Jun 6, 2024 · A sequence in volleyball where the ball is in play and is being sent back and forth over the net between teams. Rallies continue until a team makes a mistake, earns a point, or fails to return the ball legally. #16 Serve. The act that initiates each point in volleyball, where a player hits the ball over the net from behind the end line.
Line Hit. The line hit is the opposite of the cross court hit, in which the hitter aims to send the ball straight down the line, parallel to the sideline. This technique is often used to catch the defense playing in the right back side of the court, usually the setter, off guard once again to secure points by exploiting gaps in the block formation.
- Overhand Serve. An overhand serve is the most popular way to serve the ball. It can be efficient and powerful, leading to success. The ball is tossed with the non-dominant hand above the head.
- Underhand Serve. The underhand serve is used by beginners and those unable to swing at a ball above the head. The ball is held in the non-dominant hand and the dominant hand swings through the ball.
- Jump Serve. A jump serve presents a challenge for the opponent. The ball is often hard hit and has a steep downward motion after passing over the net.
- Bump Pass. Also known as the forearm pass, this pass is the easiest to control. A bump pass is made from the forearms, or platform, of a volleyball player.

During long rallies, the line is typically what is open for the attacker. When working on hitting line, drills should focus on taking the approach and jump out of the equation for the hitter.
Attack Line: A line three meters away from, and parallel to, the net. A back-row player cannot legally attack the ball above the net unless he takes off on his jump from behind this line. Attack: The offensive action of hitting the ball.
