Altirra BASIC is a completely new BASIC interpreter that is fully compatible with Atari BASIC while being completely different internally. It normally ships as part of the Altirra 8-bit emulation system, but can also be loaded into any Atari from disk, or in theory, burned to ROM.
Starting Altirra BASIC Altirra BASIC comes in two forms, an 8KB cartridge ROM image (atbasic.bin) and a DOS executable (atbasicx.xex). Both start the same BASIC interpreter, with minor differences. Cartridge version The 8KB cartridge version is made as a drop-in replacement for the Atari BASIC cartridge or system BASIC ROM (XL/XE systems).

It's designed as a system emulator and debugger instead of a games machine, so there is some setup involved. There is a README file in the archive, but here are some quick tips: First: Software.you need some actual 8-bit Atari (not Atari ST!) software to run. If yo...
Altirra has relatively few system requirements: 1. Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, 11 or later, either 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64 or ARM64). (Windows RT not supported) 2. Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 CPU or better (SSE2 required), or Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or newer (ARM64 version). 3. Graphics card supporting DirectX 9.0 with pixel shader 2.0 or later...

Acid800 is a test suite designed to stress 8-bit Atari emulators. It tests a wide variety of program-visible hardware behaviors and reports any deviations from actual hardware behavior, such as missing features or incorrect timing. Acid800 can be run either as a full suite or as standalone tests, with symbols and source included. Also included are ...

This is a document describing all of the interesting behavior I've discovered in the Atari 8-bit hardware.
BASIC reference manual
This is the manual for Altirra BASIC, the BASIC interpreter embedded within the emulator.
Jun 6, 2015 · System --> Firmware --> BASIC tells Altirra what what to use for internal BASIC in XL/XE emulation. The best setting for that is to leave it set to automatic. With the automatic setting, Altirra will select the most appropriate ROM to use based on what hardware you are emulating and which ROMs are registered for its use in the System --> Firmware --> Firmware Images.
Mar 3, 2020 · Thanks, but I think you're misunderstanding my question. I'm looking for ROMs of supported devices for Altirra (as per the screenshot posted below). I've already got a pretty good handle and system ROMs and BASIC. Edited March 3, 2020 by MrFish
Atari System ROMs. Altirra comes with its own operating system, Altirra BIOS, which offers a reasonable level of compatibility. However, not all disk or tape images will run flawlessly with the Altirra BIOS. For maximum compatibility, you need so called Atari System ROMs. These are files with the .rom extension.
