  1. Boards come factory-primed and with a smooth finish on one side and a wood-grain finish on the other. Look for composite trim that includes zinc borate, a wood preservative. Butt joints are generally preferred on long runs, with gaps to allow for expansion and contraction (see manufacturers’ instructions for recommended gap sizes), but scarf joints may be used as well.

    • Vinyl Trim. Vinyl trim was first created in the 1950s along with vinyl siding. Like vinyl siding, the trim is made of a type of plastic that’s created in a mold.
    • Aluminum Trim. Aluminum siding was one of the first wood alternatives, and aluminum trim followed shortly after. Like aluminum siding, it’s made of a lightweight metal that’s been painted, and that can be bent and formed into any shape.
    • Steel Trim. Steel is another metal trim that usually performs better than aluminum. It’s more durable and doesn’t dent the way that aluminum does. It also usually has a wood-look grain to it, while aluminum is usually smooth, so steel trim can give you a slightly more realistic look to it.
    • Fiber Cement Trim. Another alternative to wood trim, without many of the drawbacks of the others, is fiber cement trim. Like fiber cement siding, the trim comes in a wide range of colors and can be painted, so it’s possible to easily match the rest of your home’s facade.
    • Make the Switch & Ditch Wood. Wood is a troublesome material for exterior work. It shrinks and swells, rots, warps and feeds insects. Years ago, builders used wood because that was their only option.
    • Why Wood Isn’t Worth the Worry. Wood trim expands and contracts with changes in humidity. Paint can flex with that movement for a while. But eventually, tiny cracks develop.
    • What are the Alternatives? We soaked five types of trim in a bucket of water for about a month. That’s not a scientific simulation of real-world conditions, and most of these products aren’t intended for that kind of punishment.
    • Cellular PVC. Because it is made from plastic, cellular PVC trim will probably last longer than the rest of the house. It is rot-and-insect-proof and does not absorb water, which makes it a great option for trim that will get wet a lot.
    • Rice Hull Wall Cladding and Decking. There are a lot of composite decking and siding options on the market these days, and recycled plastic is usually the dominant ingredient.
    • Bamboo Lumber. Another sustainable wood alternative is bamboo, which has the natural benefits of being insect- and rot-resistant. Plus, it’s a fast-growing and sustainable alternative to wood.
    • Paper Wall Studs. Recycled paper might just be a game changer when it comes to building stud walls. The company Wood Tube developed paper studs for use in non-load-bearing walls to reduce the construction industry’s impact on climate.
    • Wood Composite Siding and Decking. Wood composites aren’t a new alternative, but they are becoming more advanced. Molded from real oak boards, Millboard actually looks and feels like real wood, so once you’ve found the right tint, you won’t have to repaint the surface.
  2. Feb 15, 2022 · Choose reclaimed wood molding if you want to install a rustic vibe into the room or throughout the house. One of your most expensive options is Reglet trim, but it’s worth it for the unique depth that it creates. Whether you choose rubber, porcelain, vinyl, or reclaimed wood trim, there’s no limit to baseboard alternatives.

  5. 3. Wood composites. As the name suggests, composite materials combine wood with recycled plastics or other components. As compared to lumber, composites are a more sustainable way to use trees. For example, composite deck boards can be made with scrap wood fiber leftover from cutting solid hardwood deck boards.
