For maximum compatibility, you need so called Atari System ROMs. These are files with the .rom extension. There are several versions of these ROMs available, but we will use ATARIXL.ROM which is the Atari XL/XE kernel ROM. Install and configure Altirra. Install Altirra. Before you begin. Altirra is designed with emulation quality in mind, sometimes over speed and polish. It's designed as a system emulator and debugger instead of a games machine, so there is some setup involved. There is a README file in the archive, but here are some quick tips:

Nov 14, 2021 · Ive been using emulators since the late 80s xformer pcditto come to mind, then everything in the 90s. No other emulator i have used feels as right as Altirra. like i mean there are many great emus out there but Altirra you would think was an official atari of back then release meant as the next platform. It works so well.
