Most people make stands out of 2x lumber as a frame and then wrap the frame in oak faced plywood for appearance. Just depends on what look you are going for.

I have found that it is relativly inexpensive, a 5/8 4x8 sheet should be around $50. If you want 3/4 cabinet grade plywood should be about $30-$40.
