While oak trees occasionally sprout branches and grow to huge sizes, birch tends to grow to a more predictable size, just five to seven blocks tall. This makes it especially suitable for indoor gardens.
Bark is now called "<type> Wood". Wood now exists as a separate block; previously placed wood looks the same, but still drops logs instead of wood. The textures of wood have been changed. A crafting recipe for wood has been added. Wood blocks have been added to the creative inventory. Wood now generates in the new villages.

Just don’t like the color. I prefer oak planks for the darker color, and because they were the original plank design. Birch is good but I feel it's forests take up about 40% of my worlds I make, I think updating the forests and lowering their highly common rates could bring down the hate.
