In 1866, the Childs-Nickerson Hardware Co. opened a store in this building. The company changed its name to the Athens Hardware Co. in 1885 and continued to occupy the building until 1972. In the 1970s, the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, now Historic Athens, prevented the building’s demolition.
