The Ammunition case is a container with the purpose of saving space within the player's inventory. It provides 49 inventory slots in a 7x7 grid and only takes up 4 inventory slots itself. Only Ammunition can be stored in it.

Containers, as the name suggests, are items for containing things. Some of these items can not be equipped on the character but are used to free up inventory space by providing storage and taking up fewer inventory slots. Hover over the icons of the containers for a quick view of their layouts.
I store ammo in ammo boxes, mags in mag boxes, and keep my most used mag/ammo combos full of what I use. Everything else I load on demand.

L ALT-T to check ammo/amount, but you can only get a definite count of ammo if it's a mag with a "mag window" think the MAGPUL P-mags are an example of this. Alt + T Whenever you do that keybind it shows what ammo and amount in the mag while holding the gun.
