Health Protection is one of the core fields of public health work. It can be defined as: “The protection of individuals, groups and populations through expert advice and effective collaboration to prevent and mitigate the impact of infectious disease, environmental, chemical and radiological threats.
Primary prevention aims to prevent the onset of specific diseases via risk reduction – by altering behaviours or exposures that can lead to disease, or by enhancing resistance to the effects of a disease agent. Primary prevention aims to reduce the incidence of disease; examples include vaccination and smoking cessation.
