The soil description status refers to the quality of the description and analytical data. The following step is the description of the soil forming factors (climate, landform, parent material, land use/cover, vegetation, landscape age and history) in the area around the observation point.
This chapter provides a brief summary of the main terminology used to describe soils at the scales of the landscape and pedon. It refers to the section of the Canadian Soil Information System (CanSIS) Manual for Describing Soils in the Field 1982 Revised in which the terminology and methods of coding descriptive data are defined in detail.
Complete descriptions of soils are essential in any soil survey. The descriptions serve as a basis for soil identification, classification, correlation, mapping, and interpretation. A complete description also documents the conditions at the site of any soil-related research (Manual for Describing Soils in the Field, 1982, revised).
