- Islamic Psychology or ilm an-nafs (science of the soul) is an important introductory textbook drawing on the latest evidence in the sub-disciplines of psychology to provide a balanced and comprehensive view of human nature, behaviour and experience.
It conceptualizes the human being with a focus on the heart as the center of the person more so than the mind and is grounded in the teachings of the Qur’an, Prophetic teachings, and the knowledge of the soul from the Islamic tradition.
Siddiqui and Malek (1996), in their book chapter Islamic Psychology: Definition and Scope, assert that Islamic psychology is “the study of persons who have complete surrender and submission and obey the laws of God”.
Islamic Psychology (Ilm Ul Nafs) is the study of the “self” (nafs) or the “psyche” from an Islamic Perspective with concepts that are not included in western forms of studying the field i.e the unseen influences, the impact of destiny, the sway of the shaytaan and the inclusion of the soul.
