May 1, 2023 · Hodges lashes the historic reformational account of the Gospel, which he labels “Lordship salvation,” as a form of works-righteousness, because it affirms that repentance—turning from sin to serve Jesus as one’s Lord—is as necessary for salvation as faith—turning from self-reliance to trust Jesus as one’s Savior.
- Scripture teaches that the gospel calls sinners to faith joined in oneness with repentance (Acts 2:38; 17:30; 20:21; 2 Peter 3:9). Repentance is a turning from sin (Acts 3:19; Luke 24:47) that consists not of a human work but of a divinely bestowed grace (Acts 11:18; 2 Timothy 2:25).
- Scripture teaches that salvation is all God's work. Those who believe are saved utterly apart from any effort on their own (Titus 3:5). Even faith is a gift of God, not a work of man (Ephesians 2:1-5, 8).
- Scripture teaches that the object of faith is Christ Himself, not a creed or a promise (John 3:16). Faith therefore involves personal commitment to Christ (2 Corinthians 5:15).
- Scripture teaches that real faith inevitably produces a changed life (2 Corinthians 5:17). Salvation includes a transformation of the inner person (Galatians 2:20).
Jul 18, 2023 · The doctrine of lordship salvation is a theological perspective that emphasizes the lordship of Jesus Christ in the process of salvation. It asserts that true faith in Christ involves believing in His person and work and surrendering one’s life to His authority and lordship.
Of greatest importance is how the Bible defines salvation. It is clear salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:16). The subtle danger of Lordship Salvation is to claim a person must show signs of changes to prove his or her salvation.
The Bible clearly teaches that salvation is a gift of God and not of works lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8,9). Conservative evangelicals emphasize and rightly so, that no man can work his way to heaven. They preach consistently and forcefully against good works as a basis for salvation.
What is Lordship salvation? The term Lordship Salvation is a deceptive label for this view of salvation because it suggests that this view involves works. But this view says that repentance and submission to Christ accompanies saving faith.
