So, which is the best Mahler symphony? Here’s our ranking of all nine, from bottom to top. 9. Mahler Symphony No. 8. In ninth position is Symphony No. 8. From whatever direction you choose to view it, Mahler’s Eighth is his most outrageously ambitious symphony and, we’d argue, the most self-indulgent of them all.
- Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra / Rafael Kubelík. (DG) This distinguished coupling has already been available at bargain price so its appearance in The Originals livery comes as something of a surprise.
- Adriana Kucerova (soprano), Christianne Stotijn (mezzo-soprano); London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Choir / Vladimir Jurowski.
- Lipton; Choir of the Transfiguration; NYPO / Leonard Bernstein. ''This is the first time I have ever heard Bernstein conduct Mahler, and I certainly hope that it will not be the last.''
- Persson; Budapest Festival Orchestra / Iván Fischer. What no one will deny is the amazing unanimity and precision of the playing here and the superlative quality of the sound engineering.
Mahler 2 is a little long winded with the first three movements but the finale is one of the most exciting symphonies in the entire classical repertoire. My least favorite Mahler symphony is No. 3, it is way too long, approaching 100 minutes.

Klemperer with the Philharmonia is frequently voted the best, and it's up there. Bruno Walter's stereo version too. I haven't seen a consensus modern version, but I'm partial to Ivan Fischer. I’ve heard them all (or close to it), and Rattle with CBSO is tops for me. This is my fave recording too.
