Risen is an action role-playing game franchise developed by the German company Piranha Bytes. It is published and distributed by the German company Deep Silver, a division of Koch Media. The franchise is close to the three first episodes of the Gothic franchise, also developed by Piranha Bytes.

Piranha Bytes GmbH was a German video game developer based in Essen. It was best known for their Gothic and Risen series of role-playing video games. Piranha Bytes was founded in Bochum in 1997 and bought by Phenomedia in 1999. When Phenomedia filed for insolvency in May 2002, the Piranha Bytes management bought out the studio.
Feb 6, 2023 · Risen is a messy RPG, in the sense you have to discover quest givers and objectives organically. The journal makes notes of important NPCs but doesn’t mark them on the map. It’s also not uncommon to have no obvious forward trajectory until a half dozen quests suddenly coalesce and resolve together.
