May 24, 2019 · Definition: The Italian musical command smorzando (often abbreviated smorz. ) is an indication to gradually slow down and soften the notes until nothing is heard; a diminuendo that fades very slowly, often accompanied by a very gradual ritardando .
smorz. is short for smorzando: literally "dampening" in the sense of dampers, but the meaning is to gradually fade out: softer *and* slower. The circle with an arc above it is a fermata , meaning a pause: hold the note beyond its marked length.
