The Soil Survey Manual (USDA, Agriculture Handbook No. 18) provides the major principles and practices needed for making and using soil surveys and for assembling and using related data. The Manual (issued in March 2017) serves as a guiding document for activities of the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS).
The soil classification system used in these surveys was rather simple and conventional, compared with the international soil classification systems now existing. Its advantage was that it was based upon almost entirely physical characteristics (texture, structure, colour, depth, drainage, moisture retention, etc.) of the soils which can be easily recognized in the field.
