Symphonic sections - with only the symphonic instruments and vocals - are frequent and longer than in power metal. These are the most important differences I have noticed as a fan of both genres. I'm no expert of course (just had a few years of music theory as a kid) and they exist on a spectrum, or more like on a triangle alongside progressive metal.
